Conservation areas are about much more than historic buildings. They are places where history, community and everyday life come together.
Rochdale Borough Council commissioned Woohoo to prepare Conservation Area Appraisals and Management Plans for two historic areas, helping to ensure their unique character continues to thrive while adapting to future needs.
The first step was understanding what makes each place special. Through detailed site visits, historical research and building assessments, Jess explored how each conservation area had evolved over time and identified the features that give it its distinctive sense of place.

Just as importantly, local people were invited to share their views. Consultation events, surveys and conversations with stakeholders helped uncover local stories, concerns and aspirations that may not have been visible through research alone.
The completed appraisals captured the character, significance and key heritage assets within each area, while also highlighting opportunities for enhancement. The accompanying management plans translated this understanding into practical actions, providing guidance on future development, maintenance, public realm improvements and community-led initiatives.
The result is more than a planning document. It is a shared vision for the future of two historic places, helping the Council, residents and property owners work together to protect what makes them special while embracing positive change.
